Gebo the Rune of Connections, Reciprocity, Fair Exchange, Offering, Receiving, a Gift Freely Given and Unconditional
"Gebo, the rune of gift and connection can be found in the reaching warmth of the sun, the exchange of breath to leaf, leaf to lung. The gifts of nature invite us into deeper connection with self and land. Gebo is the rooted connection of tree, foot on soil, it is the gift of heart meeting heart, it is offered in a smile.” Duncan White – Dartmoor Rune Lore
"My journey with Gebo began with the new moon and it was early summer when the Hawthorn blossoms are going over and the Foxgloves are at full hight while the bracken is just unfurling.
At this time of year everything feels like a gift! A gift of colours and scents, the whole world seems so busy growing and living. I was grateful to be able to follow this rune at this time of the year. Everything I included in this piece speaks of gifts given in exchange as well as freely and unconditionally offered.
The place where Gebo can be found on the moor is in the Teign Valley where the rune is literally imprinted in the steep valley walls covered in a lush primordial forest. As I walked from Sharp Tor to Hunters Tor soaking up all the energy from so many things around me rushing upwards in the race for light and life, listening to the constant humm of insects and occasional call of a crow, I could see the rune of Gebo right there in the landscape and feel it inside me, reminding me to embrace the gift of being alive and in nature.
This painting is the combination of that walk and the wisdom of Gebo. It is a reminder; our hearts must be open and loving if we wish to be able to receive and give. Closed and hateful hearts cannot give and receive, they end up eating themselves until there is nothing left.
This picture is a window into my open and loving heart."
